Should i build or buy a pc?

hi, i am in need of a pc. i have a laptop (nothing fancy) and do some major video editing, e.g. make dvd’s convert various formats. all of which take a toll on my just over a year old laptop. i am 16 and i want this laptop to last to college as this is my 2nd laptop the other one broke. i have a job and almost a grand saved up towards a vehicle, probably a 70 duster, anyways i have some stuff to sell like my 360 cuz i got a ps3 and want to slim down on electronics. the pc i want should be dual or quad core intel, or amd but amd lags behind in the reviews. i found an hp xw4400 refurbed for 9, intel dual core and a dell vostro 410 for 1 quad core, i wanted full size atx boards for future upgrades if necessary like new mobo for i7 when they come down in price. i dont care if they are refurbed, i want to take a load off my laptop hp pavilion dv4 and have something for my video encoding and maybe some games. if i build it i would be temted to go overboard on specs and would rather buy something with decent specs and buy small upgrades here and thers e.g. ram, hdd, video card, cpu cooler. the links are posted below, but i want the budget to be at least under 400 and i know i would be unable to build and intel systen for that, i really want to restore and old car and need to save my money. i will be selling my xbox 360 and some games for 300-350 and that would cover the pc either one. the links are posted below. alsow how should i bring this about to my parents, should i go with the whole not wanting to wear my laptop down, which in reality it is i mean its not a workhorse laptop and ive noticed a huge increase in time it take to finish encodeing im opening a checking acount, i told my parents a cd or savings but they insisted i need quick access to money if something cames up and interest rates are low 2. so i would be ordering it online or if i build through newegg

note this is not going to be my main pc, i dont care about the best of the best or anything i just want a desktop with power for some basic video encoding but with plenty of upgrade potential

ADD: I have selected parts for your computer if you want to see it shoot me an email. It’s about 0 shipping included with a mail in rebate but I think it will suit you nicely. I seriously discourage you from getting a refurb office computer…

Okay here’s the deal. Don’t get a computer build it yourself. The thing is unfortunately you have to go a little overboard when it comes to video editing.

Now when you say major video editing do you mean cutting clips and sewing them together editing or actually adding in special effects?

I think you should build your computer. By no means is this going to be a low end computer. I would recommend an AMD Phenom II or Athlon II X4 for your quad core needs. The Athlon II X4 costs 0 and is really cheap, but it really does give you a bang for your buck.

I’ve done some several test configs with the Athlon II X4. I can build a quad core system with 2 gigs of RAM, integrated graphics, and a 500GB drive with a DVD burner or about 0. You may want to settle in or something upscale.

Lol trust me buddy that Core 2 Duo won’t cut it.

If you buy a crappy Windows PC, it’s not going to last to or through college. Save your money and get a Mac instead. It’s actually a quality item that will last and retain it’s value. You get what you pay for, so if you want it really cheap, expect shoddy, too. Contrary to the myth that all Windows fanboys spew, Macs are not more expensive than a Windows PC.

If you know what you want to spend, you can build your PC from parts at Ebay, and you can choose the case that will allow you to upgrade in the future, however do not forget that if you do build a PC you will need a copy of windows you can use that is not being used on another PC.

You can get a decent PC for less than $400-500 and as long as you keep it free of spyware and defragment at least once a month etc it should last you some good time.

    Check these websites:

Or if you save for a Mac you will be looking at spending the at least $1,000.

Definitely build your own computer, it is much more fun and has much more reward. It also gives you better bang for your buck. I am currently in the middle of my computer build, it is much more fun and gives you one heck of a learning experience. It also costs between 10 and 20% less to build you own computer. depending on the comparable manufacturer. (For example Dell costs a good 15% more than building a computer with the exact same components)

I am certainly done buying pre-built PC’s uneless it is a Netbook or Laptop (I can’t imagine trying to build one of those)
