How can I know my ambition?

I am 28 and a CA (CPA). But I do not have a good experience of the quality work a CPA does. I am an Indian.

In school, I loved accountancy, economics, maths. I hated business studies because everything was so general like leadership qualities, planning, control, etc. It was so boring. I did not have any ambition then.

I studied commerce. After that I moved to college, studied tax, accounts, law there. I do not hate law but it is a little boring as the procedures like demerger, reduction of capital, etc. are very long. I hate learning the procedures as it is boring and hard to remember.

I love stocks, options, buybacks – I worked for a KPO and we used to work out the various ratios, enterprise value, etc. I just loved that but becuase we worled on the templates, I used to make silly errors like not changing the formula, changing the company name, year, etc. Perhaps I was not careful. I worked there for 5 months and quit 4 years ago because I was making these **** mistakes and all my batch mates used to crib and were leaving the company. But still, I regret my decision. KPOs are not considered very good but it was my first job. I did not have any ambition then but one and that to change the job.

Now, I am working in a company I am hating because the average age of people here is 35-40 and they are very outdated. Every day, I have to travel 100 kms. I am reconciling the bank accounts, and not liking the work here too. It is core accounting. There is getting no value addition of any kind on me.

I am not able to detect my likes and dislikes. This work is so silly. I have not been able to make any progress for the last 4 years. I tried to change jobs but could not convert. I am not getting enough interview calls. The technical rounds do me in sometimes.

So, I am planning to take GMAT by the mid of the next year at the max. I think Investment banking can be a good line for me? What do you suggest? I am thinking of doing MBA from abroad. Have got a list of Unis from FT rankings. Just checking their sites. I can work for any number of hours in that field because I love to calculate, work out ratios, etc. And after that analyzing those figures and doing research.

Chosen Answer:

shoot for the stars, if you land half way thats still great! it sounds like youre numb to your own
emotional state.
If your job is causing you self detrimental depression tell your boss you would like to practice healthy
working relationships and possibly there are other tasks that can be assigned that you would do well.
perhaps he sees fit that you take on different responsibility at this stage in your career.

make your life outside of work for the meantime as exciting or fun and calm as possible.
do something youve wanted to do for a long time but just havnt.
you can do simple things, baby steps, to transition your life into a happier state if you dont see things changing at work Immediately.

to lighten your long term stressers,
you could also think about going to school in a country you are already familiar with.
and maybe just going to another country for a month or two and rent a furnished apartment off
of craigslist solely to learn the culture and have time to decompress and see the world without having to worry about mid term papers and things knocking on your door.

good luck :)
